Navigating Political Talk: Setting Boundaries for Less Stress and More Harmony

With the inauguration, political discussions may feel more frequent and intense than usual. These conversations can often be stressful and tense, sometimes leading to blowouts with families, friends, and coworkers. You may steer clear around these conversational landmines but find it almost unavoidable. To avoid stress and keep peace, consider learning strong political boundaries and implementing them in your life.

Setting Political Boundaries

  1. Communication

One of the first steps to setting political boundaries is communicating them. Sit down with any loved ones that you’re setting boundaries with and let them know what topics you’re comfortable and uncomfortable discussing with them. Then, let them know how you’ll keep these boundaries in place.

  1. Sticking to your guns

Actually saying no is a lot more difficult than telling yourself you want to say no. Having a support system that can help you stick to your boundaries without wavering is extremely important. This ensures that others understand the seriousness of these boundaries and discourages them from overstepping or disregarding them.

Remove yourself

If someone insists on bringing up politics, it’s best to disengage rather than engage. This could mean physically removing yourself by leaving the space or politely letting them know you’re not interested in continuing the discussion. You might say you’re uncomfortable discussing politics and gently steer the conversation toward a different topic.

  1. Attend therapy

Consulting with a mental health professional can help you develop the boundaries you want to set and the best approach. A therapist can also walk you through any coping mechanisms that can ease any anxiety surrounding boundaries or politics.

Setting boundaries can keep your relationships healthy, especially with touchy topics that may cause unnecessary tension.
