New Year No Stress: How to set Resolutions that work for you

The New Year often brings a sense of renewal, offering a fresh start after a challenging year. However, it can also come with the pressure to set overly ambitious resolutions. If you find yourself stressed about keeping up with your new goals, you might be aiming for perfection—an approach that can quickly lead to feeling overwhelmed and, ultimately, falling short. So, how can we set realistic expectations this year and support you in achieving your goals?

How to manage your New Year resolution expectations

Making New Year resolutions with the mindset of perfection will lead to unnecessary stress, and may even take a toll on your self-esteem and confidence if you struggle to keep up with them. Starting a new skill or trying to achieve new goals will inevitably come with setbacks and a learning curve. Recognizing this and developing the resilience to push through challenges is key to long-term success.

  1. Break down your goals

Your end goal may feel daunting as you take your first steps toward achieving your resolution.  To avoid feeling discouraged, making smaller achievable goals can help you focus on the steps towards those smaller goals, instead of your end goal.

  1. Evaluate why you’re making resolutions

Before making your resolutions ask yourself if you’re doing so because you want to or because you feel like you need to, evaluating your reasons can help you stay motivated throughout the year.

Documenting the rationale for your resolutions can serve as a reminder of why these goals are important to you.

  1. Find an accountability partner

No matter your goals having a support system can help you stick to your plan. Sharing your goals and achievements can help sustain your motivation throughout the year.

  1. Record your achievements

Writing down your achievements can help you celebrate your progress. And if you ever feel discouraged or defeated, looking over the progress you've made can be a great motivator.
